The Scented Whites of Spring

Somehow, the first of June seems like the start of summer, although officially it is still weeks away.

I couldn't bid spring farewell, though, without a tribute to these sweetly scented, delicate companions picked from our garden these past few days. And indeed, Spring arrived past her usual time, so in truth, it is still very much au printemps at Hillhaven.

Our Lily of the Valley is so abundant in the front garden and along the walkways that I can cut heady bouquets to share with my Mom.

And white lilacs, her other favorite.

Each autumn I plant hundreds of narcissus so I have plenty to cut and bring inside where the tangible fragrance in our office makes me a bit dizzy and very happy.

Simple garden flowers, pale and precious, inspiring joy and wonder. I don't believe it is a coincidence that their purity is accompanied by heavenly fragrance.

Wishing you a joyful week! I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the South Carolina magazine.Thank you very much for your lovely comments. Perhaps I'll have a chance to do another before too long.

June 1 is our fourth Anniversary! Happy Annivesary, D. You make all my dreams come true, even ones I didn't know I had.

I love you.

(D is alone in Europe but won't be for long.)

  2. Beautiful. You know that top one would make a great poster. You could title it something to do with flowers of spring (or perhaps "flores veris" if you want to stick to Latin:-)

  3. Dear Georgianna,

Your work is a wonderful heartwarming source of inspiration. The fragile beauty and soft color schemes of the flowers and gardens you choose feel very intimate.

Your sensitive eye for texture and color are masterful!

Thank you for sharing and inspiring,
I wish you a lovely day filled with flowers!

The scent of Lily of the Valley is one of my favourites. Definitely appreciate having them in the garden, and bringing them inside in spring.

Happy Anniversary to you both! And happy travels by the sounds of it dear Georgianna ... :D

  28. This is so so very pretty again. I enjoy your posts so much. How wonderful that you still have marcissus blooming now. The last marcissus in bloom here was the narcissus poeticus and that was more than a month ago. Spring came very fast here and the temperatures have been more as if it was summer; this year is a recordyear when it comes to sunshine, and unfortunately also drought, in our little part of the world.

Happy anniversary! Hope you'll enjoy your time over here.

    Bye,
    Marian

  31. So beautiful! I feel as if I can smell the fragrance these lovely flowers. The blossoms in our area are long gone and we are getting ready for the heat wave that accompanies summer. I'm not very excited for that. The weather has actually been quite pleasant lately. I do wish you a happy anniversary. Congratulations! xoxo, K

  39. Lily of the Valley is so beautifully shaped. It spreads really really badly in my opinion. I have it but they never bloom so I have only leaves all over and that I don't like. I would prefer lovely flowers as you have:)
Great collections of white flowers, you have captured all so wonderfully like you always do.
I wish you a very happy anniversary.

  42. Hi G
Loved this post, something about white flowers, especially the lily-of-the-valley that I've been bringing indoors too.
I saw a white lilac this morning white walking T and thought how nice one would look in my yard; such a crisp clean colour. Hmm, have to think about this.
A very happy anniversary to you and David and I know you'll celebrate when he returns home. One month after you is our anniversary, but a long time of 39 years.
    Hugs,

because i am all about detail, i notice the things in your photos beyond the actual flowers, my favorite in this post are the lily of the valleys and the white lilacs. they are so beautiful....but what really caught my eye is that fabulous table that you photographed them on. i am drooling into my keyboard right now looking at the white and aqua patina. its beautiful and is the perfect backdrop for your beautiful artwork!!

I love the milk tones and, by the way, I've spotted a 5-petaled lilac on one branch - that's considered a good luck sign ;)
...I haven't seen lilies of the valley in the wild for years but I remember to have seen them twice in a forest; they made little prairies where they were growing look so elegant and joyful!
    Happy anniversary and countless more!

This is a beautiful post. Lily of the Valley is my birth flower so it's even more special. You have captured these lovely blooms, as well as the others, with the utmost detail of eye and heart. And your write-up is just as beautiful. I agree, about the fragrance. God thought of everything. And He has given you a talent and desire to capture that beauty - thank you for sharing your stunning work with me and everyone else.

P.s. Thank you for the note regarding the trip to Washington. I shall take your recommendations under consideration.
