Venice: Impressions

The poet Byron coined the name "The Bridge of Sighs" (top photo) for the bridge leading the condemned from the Venetian courts to the prisons on the other side. The views from the windows were the last many saw of their beloved Venice. It is a particularly haunting location in a city filled with ghostly memories and faded dreams.

Venice is a place of great contrasts – opulent yet crumbling, elegant yet simple, flamboyant yet secretive. There exists nowhere like it on Earth – it is thus endlessly fascinating.

Thank you, friends, for taking the time to visit – I hope you enjoy the images and that they bring something of the atmosphere of La Serenissima.

much love, g

p. s. I hope you will forgive my continued absence from visiting many of you. You know it's not my usual way. It bothers me greatly but I'm traveling again in a few days and fear I will not reach you all before I go. Trust that I look forward to it when I return, envisioning a long summer of sharing and catching up. Meanwhile, I've prepared flowery and fun posts for you during the time I'm away. Wishing you a lovely end of May! xoxo

  5. What a beautiful pictures. They take me a few years back. I just couldn't stop taking photos. I have crossed the bridge of sighs from the inside and saw the horrible small prisons. Very creepy place.
You are so right, there is no other place like Venice.

  16. Ahhh, Venice. Its such a treasure and you've captured it so beautifully Georgianna. And this time of year, when beauty grows and flourishes, is so fleeting for you and your camera. It's not at all surprising that you've dashed off again for another photo excursion! There are no expectations here so enjoy where you are.

  20. Hello G
Thanks for sharing these photos of Venice; your time spent there was obviously enjoyed very much. Now that summer's here, many of us don't visit as often as we'd like. However, like good friends, we pick up where we left off when there's time.
    Have a good journey.

  21. These photos are dreamy. I love the selective focus and the soft creamy blurs in the backgrounds. The soft pastel colours are wonderful. I have been reading a series of books and one was set in Venice but these photos give me a much better visual of the beauty of Venice than that book.
